Vickie Blanchet, Program Director

My name is Vickie Blanchet and I am the Program Director for the Grizzly Discovery Center Program.  I have been married to my wonderful husband, Curtis, for twenty-eight years.  During that time, I have worn many hats: wife, mother, homeschool teacher, social worker, administrator, and foster parent ~ just to name a few.  I have two sons, both of whom were a part of the Newport Learning & Enrichment Center.  My youngest also took several classes through the high school.  I have traveled all over the world with my wandering feet taking me to six of the seven continents.  While I’m not a Newport native, I have lived here since 2008 and love the beauty of the area.

I have a dual background in Social Work and Education.  Having a Master’s Degree in Social Work, I have worked with battered women, children-at-risk, and marginalized people groups.  Additionally, I served as a foster parent for fourteen years, focusing on children impacted by drugs and alcohol.  Sixteen years of my life were dedicated to homeschooling my two children from kindergarten through graduation as well as tutoring other children in math, science, history, and English.

In the four years that I have worked with the GDC, I have been inspired by my students to learn more, try more and do more.  I hope to inspire them to do the same.

I grew up an active member of the 4-H program, and am still continuing that passion by being part of the Washington State 4-H Know Your Government program and serving as an advisor to the Washington State Ambassadors. Being part of 4-H has instilled a passion for positive youth development, and a drive for making the best better. I have served in my current job position for the last year, and I look forward to continuing my work with the students at Stratton Elementary School. Go Griz!

Hi! My name is Cynthia Byerley. I received my Bachelors Degree in Education from EWU in 2009 and since then have been teaching Art classes at the Create Art Center in Newport. Most of my life I've wanted to be an educator to those that need that extra attention and encouragement to succeed. I began tutoring for ages K through 6th grades and I am the creator and owner of The Summer Explorer's Club for kids, a program that has camps and workshops in the summertime at Create. These camps are educational, and fun. The three camps each last a week long. We spend our days solving mysteries, inventing, Learning survival skills or experimenting with cool science projects. We also choose a different country each summer and explore the culture, cuisine, language, arts and lifestyle of its people. The camps are filled with hands on activities and games. The kids learn problem solving, creative and critical thinking, observation skills and teamwork. I have 3 children 6 grandchildren, 4 cats, and I raise Australian Sherpards, I have three. I have lived in the area since 1992 and love the Pacific Northwest. I grew up in Oak Grove, Oregon, but spent many years in other states, I've worked in communications, a publishing house, restaurants, construction and even with celebrities, but have always returned to this beautiful part of the country. If I can bring a smile to a child's face during their hardest times then I've started something big!

Cheyanne Bradbury: Grade 2 Academic Coach

My name is Cheyanne Bradbury. I was raised in the small community of Priest Lake, Idaho, where my family owns and operates a small lumber mill.

Not long after graduating high school, I decided to go to school in Spokane for computer science. After attending for two years, a family emergency moved me back to this area. I unexpectedly fell into a subbing position at Newport High School in 2002, and have been with the district ever since, totaling, almost fifteen years! I currently work at Stratton Elementary, along with our team, specializing in reading and math interventions. The progress and breakthroughs I see from the students, every day, really makes my job special.

My hobbies include volleyball, photography, fishing, and spending time with friends and family at the lake. I feel really lucky to spend the extra time, after school, with these wonderful students and staff members.
