Welcome to Newport...a great place to live and learn.
Newport School District is set among the vast evergreens of Northeast Washington and is bordered by the beautiful Pend Oreille River. Only 40 minutes from Spokane, the school district has a small town feel with a big time promise: to meet the needs of all students to help each of them become a successful and participating individual in school and in life.
The District offers a traditional school schedule as well as an Alternative Program. Newport School District also offers a Parent Partnership Program which includes Homelink and the Learning Enrichment Center. The academic need of each individual student is our primary focus. We welcome the opportunity to challenge, nurture and encourage our students to reach their greatest potential.

Track Records Tumble!
Jake Wiley has now surpassed the 100 and 200 records set in 2005 by his coach, Tony Yeaw. The 100 meter record is now 10.92 – previously 10.94, and the 200 record is now 22.09 – previously 22.4. Now that Jake is also running the 400, maybe he will break the 1965 record set by Bill Von Rossum.
Aaron Castle now owns the discus record as well as the shot put record. At the Priest River Invitational, he threw 179’ 5”, breaking the previous record of 169’, set in 1983 by Dave Wilson.

On Wednesday, April 19th, Jake Wylie tied the school record in the 200 meter sprint with a time of 22.4, set in 2005 by Tony Yeaw, his current sprint coach! Coach Yeaw anticipates that Jake will break the record by season’s end.
The birdhouse tradition continues…
”Grandpa Tom” Langworthy spent the summer and fall preparing to take over the tradition started years ago by “Grandpa Henry” Rehder who passed away last year.
In January, the students began the project by making hanging bird feeders. Then in March, Grandpa Tom returned to assist every kindergartener in making a birdhouse from a pattern started by Grandpa Henry over 10 years ago.
All Stratton kindergarten students made a bird house with the generous time of Grandpa Tom and his buddy Paul Hillestad. Thanks also to the Newport High School woodshop and Tri-Pro Cedar Products for their contributions.

Candy for troops...
“Mom and Dad….did you know we need a plan to get out of our house quickly and safely? Do you know how to stop, drop and roll? We learned how to crawl low to stay safe in smoky rooms. Do you want to practice with me?”
These are some of the conversations that Stratton students are having with their parents. This week, Newport high school students in the Fire Science program enthusiastically shared their knowledge of safety with our eager young learners. We are never too young or old to learn fire safety. Be safe…be prepared…be knowledgeable in fire prevention!

You are always welcome, but here is a special invitation:
Elementary: Meet Your Teacher; August 30th, 4-6 pm
Middle School: Open House, August 30th, 5-7 pm
High School: Meet the Grizzlies, August 30th, 6-8 pm
At the Junior National Olympics in Wichita, Kansas, Aaron Castle threw a personal record of 63 ft. 8 1/4 in. and earned third place in the shot put competition. We are proud of our Grizzly!Newport AP Calculus Students have Earned Big Time Bragging Rights!!!!
The AP ("Advanced Placement") program was started by the College Board in the 1950's with the intent of challenging high school students with college level courses. The three hour test is given each May at American schools around the globe. The AP Calculus test is one of the most difficult AP tests the College Board offers. All 15 students in this year's class passed! A "5" is the highest score you can obtain on the test but even with a "3", students may be able to get math credit from their university or be exempt from beginning college calculus courses. These students worked diligently from the beginning of the year and spent a full month in intensive review right before the test and it paid off for them!!
Congratulations to each of the students and to their teacher, Karen Behrend.

Track and Field IA State Meet
Junior Aaron Castle finished 1st in shot put and second in discus. His shot put mark of 63'1" shattered the previous IA state meet record by nearly four feet.
Sophomore Arielle Walden was first in the 100 meter hurdles, second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. She prevailed in a very competitive hurdle race.
Senior Sophie Bush was third in the 1600, fifth in the 3200 and sixth in the 800 meter races. Both her 1600 and 3200 times set school records.
Senior Bethany Graham was fifth in the pole vault, braving blustery winds, rain and cold.
Senior Aric Walden finished first in the 110 high hurdles- his third state championship in the event- and third in the 300 intermediate hurdles; quite a feat considering he had torn his ACL last fall. His commitment to physical therapy and dedication paid off!
The girls earned a third place team trophy and the boys, a fourth place trophy!
Needless to say...we are proud to be Grizzlies!
